Telecommunications Systems
To further understand the concept of the telecommunication revolution, we need to expatiate on the technologies and systems that contribute to this revolution. As stated above, technology is one the factors responsible for the growth of the ICT sector in general and telecommunications in particular. Telecommunications involve a network of technological devices:
- the User devices, such as the telephone handset, and
- the transmission system such fibre optic cables, which are linked to a switching system.
Transmission systems are the elements that send a user's signal over a distance to other telecommunication facility. There are two media or channels of transmission, namely the cable systems, and wireless systems. These two distribution systems have their advantages as well as disadvantages. The different peculiarities that they offer provide a comparative advantage of one technology over the other. Let us briefly examine some common telecommunications transmissions technologies:
