Introduction

The purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the necessary knowledge to identify the fundamentals of regulation, types of regulation and instruments of regulation

Outcomes

  • Unit 1: Why regulate -the learner should be able to identify the basic principles of regulation and demonstrate ease with the usage of the relevant regulatory concepts.
  • Unit 2: Types of regulation - the learner should be able to identify and distinguish between types of regulation and demonstrate ease with the usage of the relevant regulatory concepts
  • Unit 3: Instruments of regulation - the learners should be able to articulate and apply the different pricing principles and concepts

Assessment

  • An assignment comprises three essays (one essay per study unit)
  • Work completed in an assignment is worth 40 percent of final mark
  • Three hour examination worth 50 percent of final mark
  • All work posted on the discussion board is worth 10 percent.

Guidelines

You are expected to submit and pass the assignment, which comprises three questions found on pages 16, 23 and 38 of this tutorial letter. Answers to each question (ie each of the three essays) should not exceed 12 typed pages (1.5) spacing. In total the assignment should not exceed 36 typed pages. You are required to type your assignments, and retain at least one hard and electronic copy, should you be required to re-submit the assignment.

Note: You need to obtain at least 50 percent for the assignment before you are permitted to write the examination.

As a part-time student, you will need to pace your study time independently. However because the dates of the examinations are set, and cannot be altered, you will be required to pace your work carefully. A study program, set according to 15 hour weekday (3 hours per day) and 10 hour weekend sessions, is provided below to assist you in this endeavor.

Some Tips

  • Avoid leaving all the work for the critical weekend before submission date
  • Attempt all study activity questions
  • Work at a steady pace and study regularly
  • Don’t be shy to ask questions
  • Discuss study material with one or two study peers
  • Always ask a second person to proof-read your work
  • Avoid late submissions (penalties are high)
  • Ask for promotion when you complete your studies
  • Whatever you do ensure that you enjoy studying the content of this course!
